User Reviews

SpectrumView is praised for its strong configurability, reliable operation, and top-tier spectrogram visuals, with useful features like data export and easy access to recordings. Reviewers use it for birding, piano practice, and general frequency analysis, finding the visuals engaging and accurate. However, the app is frequently hit by paywalls that gate essential features, plus a controversial location-permission requirement. Users report crashes and instability, especially around file playback or library access, and complain about limited high-frequency display (ultrasonic) ranges and slower loading. Monetization and reliability concerns temper its strengths.
Pros
  • Highly configurable with easy-to-understand settings and generally reliable operation (works well).
  • Spectrogram visuals are top-notch, offering flawless quality and high accuracy with adjustable options.
  • Useful features like data export and easy access to recordings (including browser access to recordings) are provided.
  • Great for ear-birding and frequency analysis; engaging and enjoyable to use.
  • Helpful for music and audio analysis (e.g., piano practice) thanks to clear frequency visualization.
Cons
  • Paywalls and per-feature in-app purchases gate essential functionality, making many features feel inaccessible without extra cost.
  • App asks for location permissions with no clear justification, raising privacy concerns.
  • Crashes and instability reported when loading files or after purchasing extensions, making the app unreliable at times.
  • High-frequency range is limited or inconsistently displayed (ultrasonic frequencies not shown; some updates reduce the max visible freq).
  • Performance can be slow to load or respond, leading to missed sounds.

I distinctly remember being able to have both spectrogram and analyzer zoom up to 20kHz… that’s why I paid for it. Now it’s limited to 8kHz, and the setting no longer allows for anything higher.

There is no reason for an audio spectrum viewer to need location permissions.
