Pros
- Inexpensive substitute for expensive color meters; it costs only a few dollars and can save money.
- Helps achieve correct white balance quickly in photography/film, improving in-camera WB.
- Provides a spectral/graph view of the light, aiding understanding of color sources beyond just Kelvin readings.
- No external hardware required; portable and accessible on an iPhone with no extra purchases.
- Generally useful for practical photography/film work across many lighting conditions (often within about 100–200K).
Cons
- Not a true spectrometer: readings are approximate because the iPhone camera has only RGB sensors and cannot capture a full spectrum.
- Accuracy varies by light source and range; LEDs and low/high Kelvin lights can be misread (e.g., 2700K read as 3000K, 2000K read as 2700K).
- Device compatibility issues: some devices (notably iPhone X) show camera/focusing problems and readings may not update consistently.
- Occasional reliability issues on certain devices (readings not changing with movement or failing to update).
- Not suitable for scientific measurements; better as a practical aid than a precise instrument.

For photography white balance, I aim this at my light source, take a kelvin reading, enter it into my camera and viola!, perfect white balance, no need for cards nor discs…I photograph models and get them into magazines.

Just got this app and held it under our Halogen and LED lights and our LED grow-light. This app is sensitive: the grow light has rows of different color LED and as I moved my iPhone the data changed with small moves. I think it will work great. And I love that there are no (that I’ve discovered) additional in-app purchases like so many apps have nowadays.

I have some LEDs where I know the wavelengths, and under some combination lighting conditions the app is super inaccurate—but under lots of conditions (including combination ones) it’s very accurate. Useful tool, overall. I wish they would fix the inaccuracies but I’m still glad I have this app; there’s no other app that has a full spectrogram right now.
