Features & Capabilities

HotPaw Morse Words is a aid to learning Morse Code. Audio learning can be a great brain exercise. This app can help you learn the sound of entire words in Morse Code. The app is a test generator which randomly picks from 250 very common English words and sends them in International Morse Code audio through your iPhone speaker or headset. The WPM (words per minute) speed can be easily set up to 100 WPM. You can also separately set the dot speed (for Farnsworth method code), and customize the tone frequency.

Hit "Start" to start sending random Morse code text. You can choose "Show", to see the words displayed as they are sent to the speaker. This is helpful when first learning. After you are familiar with the sound of the words, you can "Hide" the display of the words sent, and attempt to copy them down on paper as your hear them. Then you can later show them in order to check how many words you copied correctly.

Optionally you can paste a custom word list, from 5 to 500 words in length, using the Settings view.

User Reviews

User reviews praise Morse Words for its effective random-word practice and extensive audio controls, including adjustable WPM (5–50), dot-speed, tone, and volume, plus a built-in 250-word vocabulary and the option to add or upload more words. The clean, simple interface supports steady progress in Morse decoding and speed. Recurrent drawbacks include clunky copy/paste of custom word lists, noticeable lag between hearing a symbol and its on-screen display, and a limited word bank (no numbers/punctuation) that frustrates long-term practice. Some reviewers also want slower beginner-friendly speeds and Apple Watch support.
Pros
  • Random word practice helps users learn to decode by listening to non-predictable sequences.
  • Wide range of adjustable audio settings (WPM 5–50, dot speed, tone and volume).
  • Built-in 250-word vocabulary with the ability to add or upload more words.
  • Clean, simple interface and easy-to-use controls.
  • Demonstrated value in increasing Morse speed and recognition over time.
Cons
  • Copy/paste of custom word lists is clunky or not always reliable.
  • Lag between hearing a symbol and its on-screen display; no option to adjust lag time.
  • Word bank is limited (no numbers/punctuation) and could use more words.
  • Not beginner-friendly due to a minimum of 5 WPM, missing slower practice options.

Random word play seems to be helping me practice. I’m happy with this app!

First of, the copy function does not work correctly, please just let users type what they wish would be better than copy and paste function the app currently uses. This app has many great features, like setting wpm, volume and tone. The best feature is the wpm which allows user to choose speed all the way up to 50 and down to 5. User can get familiar with each character at slow speed and then experience the high speed sound pattern. It also allows the dot speed wpm, a great feature that no other similar apps ever offer. One improvement I would like to propose would be to add a function or button called “repeat” or “loop”, with which the will repeat or loop indefinitely the character string user entered so that user can listen as long as wishes, to allow user to live in the Morse sound world as long as he/she likes and wishes. Best, David
