Features & Capabilities

Onyx: Pitch Pipe is a visually beautiful, three-octave pitch tool designed for quick, accurate tuning. Choose from piano, clarinet, or a precise sine-wave tone to hear notes for several seconds, or switch to continuous playback to loop strings or horns.

Use the interactive widget and watch app for fast access, and enjoy silent-mode operation. On iOS, you can tune to your preferred frequency; note that fine tuning is available only when using the Tone sound option on Apple Watch. Continuous playback mode is currently supported only within the app and cannot be used with the Today View widget or Apple Watch.

User Reviews

Users praise the app's intuitive pitch-pipe feel, three-octave range, silent-mode playback, tuning options, and tone varieties. However, recurring issues include unreliable audio, inconsistent Apple Watch support, widget and UI inconsistencies, and pitch accuracy concerns after updates. Overall, it's a strong tool for singers when it works, but reliability and platform integration need improvement.
Pros
  • Clean, intuitive interface that feels like a real pitch pipe.
  • Offers three octaves for versatile singing and transposition.
  • Supports silent-mode playback, which is essential during performances.
  • Tuning/customization options, including Hz adjustments like 432 Hz.
  • Varied playback tones/options (clarinet, piano, or other tones) for realism.
Cons
  • Sound playback is unreliable on many devices; sometimes no sound or intermittent audio.
  • Apple Watch integration is unstable or non-functional (crashes and volume control issues).
  • Widget functionality is inconsistent or removed (home screen widget and unpredictable lock screen behavior).
  • Pitch accuracy can be off (notes sound flat compared to piano, not matching A440).
  • UI bugs after updates (e.g., octave jumps when selecting a different note).

Yes, it’s really helpful, but I wish you could do more with the settings. I’m sure is probably very easy to make changes such as locking the octave you’re working on. It’s kinda annoying for example that even when you’re moving clockwise, if u pick a different note it will jump to a higher octave, which messes up your sense of pitch and melodic motion.

I’ve never been able to get this to work on my Apple Watch. No matter the settings, it doesn’t play any sound at all. Hopefully the developers will figure this out and give an update.

Perfect design. Using this in a singing group. Able to select the pitch easily with haptic feedback (kind of like the old iPod wheels), the octave(s), and even set the hertz (e.g. 432hz instead of the default 440hz). I appreciate being able to select clarinet for the sound playback. Love it!
