Features & Capabilities

  • SPL Meter with unmatched precision, weighting and Leq measurement

With dB Volume you turn your iPhone into a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) Meter. You can choose between the industry standard weighting curves and response times.

Use dB Volume for measuring environmental noises - it offers now Leq measurement!

dB Volume features:

  • response time modes: impulse, slow, fast
  • weighting functions: A B C Z (unweighted)
  • peak hold function
  • Leq measurement

We calibrated dB Volume as carefully as possible for all available devices. But: keep in mind, that due to manufacturing tolerances this calibration does not necessarily apply to your device – it’s still an iPhone and not a calibrated measuring instrument!

User Reviews

dB Volume is valued for its simple, real-time meter and usefulness in practice, but users report reliability problems with iOS updates and devices, inaccurate/uncalibrated readings, and occasional bugs, with pro upgrades adding to the issues. The core appeal remains its simplicity and free access.
Pros
  • Simple, easy-to-read decibel meter that responds to volume changes.
  • Free app with no cost to use.
  • Useful for real-world tasks like voice exercises and monitoring loudness to protect hearing.
  • Historically compatible with older devices (e.g., iPhone 4s, iPod Touch).
Cons
  • Stops working on newer iOS versions/devices and after updates; issues like no audio or no response on iPhone 6/6s and iOS 9+.
  • Inaccurate readings; A/B/C weightings off and no calibration feature; readings often lower than true levels.
  • Bugs and instability after updates; app can crash or display erroneous values (e.g., -2147).
  • Pro version upgrade causes issues or prompts purchase of another app.

Easy simple big meter. Goes up and down with change in volume, useful in gauging volume on any number of things. In my quiet living room meter reading sits/starts at about 40, not sure this is accurate starting point but I can gauge louder spikes in various sounds from there. Plus heck its free!

Ummm… You all are aware that we are on like iOS 11 point something now right?

The A, B, and C weightings are off. I am convinced that the meter is off just a tad bit. I use this on my iPhone 5S with iOS 10. Today I'm writing on March 29, 2017. So yes, it works but with some little improvements this app would be phenomenal.
