Features & Capabilities

Flashnote Derby is a gamified Chrome extension that helps kids and music students learn to read music notes. In a fast-paced horse-race format, players identify notes to power their horse toward the finish line, with each round followed by a review of missed notes to reinforce learning. A new Practice Mode removes the timer to build accuracy and confidence before racing, making it suitable for beginners and classroom use.

The extension offers multiple ways to answer: play notes on any instrument (including transposing instruments), use a MIDI device, tap on-screen letter names, or play notes on the on-screen piano keyboard. It’s highly customizable—choose treble, bass, alto, or tenor clefs; set note ranges and key signatures; adjust time limits (or disable them in Practice Mode); and scale difficulty up to five-and-a-half ledger lines. Themed courses (Pretty Pegasus, Ecliptic Encounter, Reindeer Race) keep practice fresh. Optimized for teachers with quick setup, homework assignments, automatic progress tracking, and targeted review suggestions, Flashnote Derby makes music-reading both effective and enjoyable.

User Reviews

Flashnote Derby is widely praised for being fun, engaging, and effective for teaching note reading with progress tracking and flexible play modes. Teachers appreciate progress reports and classroom usefulness. However, recurring issues include unreliable note recognition across notes and octaves, updates that break features, and account/login problems with limited developer support. Some platform compatibility concerns (Safari restrictions, external audio interface limits) also hinder use. Overall, it’s appealing and effective when functioning, but reliability and support problems are common concerns.
Pros
  • Fun and engaging for students; the space race theme keeps kids excited to learn notes.
  • Effectively teaches note reading and improves recognition and speed, with progress tracking.
  • Flexible practice options, including playing notes on a piano and customizable quizzes.
  • Teacher-friendly features and polished UI with progress tracking and classroom applicability.
Cons
  • Note recognition is inconsistent, with notes like E not reliably recognized and octave mismatches across instruments.
  • After updates, some features become unresponsive or removed (e.g., speed/flashcards reliance; sending presets).
  • Account and support issues: login/password problems and limited developer responsiveness.
  • Platform compatibility problems and accessibility issues, including Safari support limitations and external audio interface incompatibilities.

We have been using this for several years and enjoy it very much. With the update my daughter is sad it no longer has a unicorn button to start the unicorn race.

This is a very fun app and useful, except that it keeps not recognizing the E note. It marks a big X when it is clearly the E note being played on the piano, it also sometimes recognizes it but most of the time it doesn’t. Is this happening to anyone else? It’s just a problem with that one note. It’s worth saying we have only used middle C to G as of now. So don’t k own if other flaws are lurking. Hadn’t had this issue with a competing app.
