User Reviews

Mango Languages is praised for clear explanations, strong grammar and cultural notes, a broad library (including obscure languages) with library-based, often free access, plus helpful pronunciation and on‑the‑go listening. Its auto‑play and digestible lessons are also valued. Common drawbacks include language content gaps (especially for Cantonese and some languages), Japanese Kanji support omissions, end‑of‑chapter vocab without practice, imperfect pre‑tests, and several requested UI features (dark mode, word bookmarking, slower pronunciation) or broader library compatibility.
Pros
  • Clear explanations with abundant examples, plus grammar and cultural notes that aid contextual understanding.
  • Huge language catalog including obscure languages and strong library partnerships that often make Mango free through libraries.
  • Audio pronunciation and on‑the‑go listening features, with auto‑play and accessible pronunciation cues.
  • Ad‑free experience compared to Duolingo and a library‑based model that reduces cost and distractions.
  • Digestible lessons that help you form your own sentences by the end of each lesson, with practical, real‑world usage.
Cons
  • Content gaps for several languages (e.g., Cantonese has limited content; Croatian and other languages need more lessons).
  • Japanese lessons lack Kanji support, furigana, and broader reading/writing coverage; reliance on Kana limits literacy practice.
  • End‑of‑chapter Listen/Read sections introduce new vocabulary without sufficient practice reinforcement.
  • Pre‑test quality can be off (unnatural questions, missing words) and some users find it inconsistent or hard to report errors.
  • Feature and UI requests not yet implemented, such as app‑wide dark mode, ability to slow pronunciation, bookmarking/saving words, and broader library accessibility (e.g., some libraries not supported).

Fell for the trap. Saw someone mentioning it being good for southern Vietnamese online. Little did I know that they only have one unit for Vietnamese, and it was very much focused on tourist interactions (while also being way too advanced for a tourist lol)… and it definitely didn’t have any units with southern Vietnamese language used. Oh well.

I have their paid subscription but am looking for alternatives to Duolingo because their predatory business model of constantly pushing PAID users to buy points for real money to buy your way through the levels really ruins the joy of learning a language for me. However, there seems to be no app that does it all perfectly. I find this app from the sample content to be very “dry” but two definite pluses are how the app explains WHY a phrase is said a certain way - it gives insight in to the literal meaning of a phrase- and in addition to speaking with a quality voice, it also shows the phonetic spelling to help you understand how to pronounce a word better. What I really don’t like is the push to sign up for an account- free or not- especially when it only lets me see a few basic words I already know. I want to know what other lessons and activities are contained in this app before even signing up; I have ZERO interest in signing up for yet another subscription trial. I want to know exactly what the content is ahead of time and THEN if it has value I will pay for it.

It seems like a rather good app if you have the money, but you can only try out the first unit before having to get a subscription. The actual walking process is rather alright, although it can be difficult to understand how to mimic what it’s telling you to without knowing how to move your mouth. For example, making the throaty Dutch sounds, or how to move your tongue to make certain sounds in Spanish, etc.
