User Reviews

Users praise strong local coverage and easy online access on tablets and via a widget, with appreciation for certain local writers. However, recurring reliability problems, confusing navigation, and disorganization hinder the experience. Printing puzzles often fails and access to full editions/older issues is inconsistent, sometimes accompanied by redirects to another app. Overall, readers want improved stability, cleaner navigation, and reliable access to the full paper.
Pros
  • Strong local coverage with trusted journalists (Don Williams, Nathan Giese) and USA Today sports reporting.
  • Excellent accessibility across devices—read on iPad/tablet and online, with iPhone widget support.
  • Positive sentiment from multiple users who enjoy reading the paper online and want it to continue improving.
  • Content variety including local news, obituaries, sports, and comics meets readers' needs.
Cons
  • Frequent reliability issues (crashes, freezes, loading problems, and periods when paid content isn’t accessible).
  • Hard to navigate and disorganized layout with inconsistent headlines; missing menus/instructions and older editions not easily accessible.
  • Puzzles and print features sometimes fail to print (crosswords, Sudoku) and the full newspaper edition is harder to read.
  • Content accessibility issues for older issues and redirects to another app, reducing overall usability.

The WSJ online app is 1000% better!

I’ve been using the Lubbock A-J app for a number of years. Since I know longer live in the area where I grew up, I enjoy keeping up with local news, the obituaries, sports, and comics. Most of the time, the app works great. Occasionally, I have to reinstall it. Sometimes the Sunday Comics don’t appear. I especially enjoy the articles written by Don Williams and Nathan Giese along with the USA Today sports’ writers.
