User Reviews

Users broadly praise tucson.com for keeping them informed about local Tucson news and for offering straightforward access to local coverage; many value the app as a reliable way to read about the city and support local news. However, recurring problems hinder the experience: an ad-saturated UI, frequent crashes, and broken functionality (alerts and article links that don’t load). Paywalls and unclear subscription rules frustrate users who expect fuller access with a subscription. Some reviewers question bias and content quality versus accuracy. Overall, usefulness clashes with reliability and UX issues.
Pros
  • Keeps me up to date on local and national news
  • Strong coverage of Tucson local happenings
  • Easy to read stories and access local news
  • Supports local news and encourages subscribing
  • Generally useful electronic news reading experience
Cons
  • Ads are excessive and ad-heavy, interfering with the experience
  • Paywalls and unclear subscription rules limiting access
  • Reliability issues: frequent crashes and freezing
  • Broken notifications/alerts and non-loading links
  • Perceived bias and concerns about content quality

I can’t picture a day without The Arizona Daily Star. It keeps me up to date on local an national news.

This is the scenario that happens all too frequently: I get the ADS “latest headlines” email. I click on an article I wish to read. Instead of opening in the app, it opens in a browser and insists I sign in. I don’t remember my password, so I open the app and the “latest headline” I’m looking for is impossible to find. I give up and wonder why I’m paying for this at all.

I’ve had this app for years, and articles used to be tiered. Some articles were for subscribers only while others could be accessed in the app with a fair amount of ads. The app would frequently crash, and articles listed in alerts would be nonexistent when one clicked on the alert. Now the app has a limit for articles though this was never disclosed anywhere. Payment does not give you access to all articles since some are still marked “for subscribers only.” Apparently subscribing to the app doesn’t count as a subscription. At least other newspaper apps allow a certain number of stories per month. I deleted the app.
