User Reviews

RetirePlan is valued for its broad, flexible retirement modeling and strong visual ‘what-if’ capabilities, with cross-device use and responsive updates. Users praise its ease of use and ability to explore many scenarios without broker data. However, downsides include disruptive UI changes, data loss after updates, privacy concerns with cloud storage and sign-in, missing advanced features (Monte Carlo, RMDs, spouse options), and limited support.
Pros
  • Comprehensive, flexible retirement planning with many scenario inputs (market crashes, returns, expenses, income) for thorough 'what-if' analysis.
  • Easy to use with clear visuals and quick, intuitive graphs that give a comprehensive snapshot of retirement finances.
  • Independent of financial institutions; data can be kept private and exported to Excel for further analysis.
  • Strong cross-device accessibility (iPhone/iPad) and fast launch times.
  • Responsive developers who address feedback and improve the app over time.
Cons
  • Frequent UI/UX regressions after updates, making data entry harder (clunky redesign, sliders, layout changes).
  • Data migration issues and loss of older plans after updates, with difficulty recovering prior inputs.
  • New sign-in requirement and cloud storage raise privacy concerns for some users.
  • Missing advanced planning features such as Monte Carlo simulations, sequence-of-returns, RMDs, and spouse retirement-date options.
  • Limited customer support options and difficulty contacting help.

This is worse than just a spreadsheet using basically excel calculations. No Monte Carlo, no sequence of returns, no configuration of failure modes. Huge ripoff, avoid

This was a great app 10-15 years ago when I bought it. Easy to use, didn’t require an account (wherein my data can be stolen) and didn’t lose my spreadsheets. This latest revision undid all that. Numbers I’d entered years ago are lost and now I can’t see how that plan worked out. Navigating is more difficult; I can’t just type in a number but have to use their goofy and uncontrollable slider. The y-axis scale changes as I enter new data. This app just keeps getting worse with every revision and it’s time I found a new one. You should, too.

I made a previous, positive review of this app, but now that I have had an opportunity to play more with it I owe it to the author to expand my review. This app allows you to factor in market corrections, major crashes, and changes in portfolio rates of return as one gets older. In addition, it allows the user to factor in a variety of future expenses and income streams. For the small cost this planning app is an essential tool for evaluating risk tolerance scenarios and life changes. I recommend it to everyone.
