User Reviews

Many reviews praise having the East Bay Times digital edition on iPad/iPhone and enjoying the paper when it loads. However, multiple reviews cite a cluttered UI with large toolbars and ads that block content, inconsistent delivery of the current edition, frequent sign-in issues, and awkward navigation that makes reading tedious. The core content is valued, but reliability and user experience have deteriorated since the update, with a strong desire to revert to the older app.
Pros
  • Subscribers value having the East Bay Times digital edition available on iPad/iPhone.
  • Content is readable and enjoyable when downloaded.
  • Readers still appreciate having the paper on a mobile device.
Cons
  • New UI uses top and bottom toolbars that crowd the screen, reducing reading area.
  • Ads and banner ads obstruct reading and are hard to close.
  • Edition loading is unreliable; current day's paper sometimes shows up as yesterday's.
  • Frequent sign-in prompts and login issues (including Apple Sign-In and keyboard not appearing) hinder access.
  • Navigation/reading is cumbersome (forced to zoom, can't smoothly move between pages, and encounter 'read one article' mode).

It mostly meets my needs but has two long standing problems that they either can’t or won’t fix: 1) If you start reading the paper then switch to another app for 30 minutes or more, it forgets what page you’re on and takes you back to the front page. I use an e-reader for books and that app NEVER loses my place. 2) It uses a lot of storage, typically about 25GB. If I clear the cache in settings, that drops to about 24GB. Why so much? I’m guessing it keeps back issues around in case I refer to them but it doesn’t provide any way to delete them. Fix these two issues and you’ll get 5 stars.

The latest update eliminated the option to read in landscape format. People read on a tablet. You have ruined the experience. If you email the comment to customer service you are told it is because of the ads. Apparently ads are more important than customers. Too bad they don’t hire more talented designers.
