User Reviews

Onleihe’s iOS app is widely criticized for instability and reliability problems. Reviewers report frequent crashes, downloads that stall, and streaming gaps, along with repeated logouts and sessions that won’t stay saved. Content loading can fail, with blank or gray pages, and some users see the app stop working after iOS updates. Pros are limited but include access to a German-language library and intermittent audiobook playback when the app functions. Overall, stability and UX improvements are needed; some users still rely on the service for German-language titles when it works.
Pros
  • Access to a large German-language library of titles, including free German books.
  • Audiobook playback can work well for some users when the app functions.
  • The app provides a dedicated platform for library borrowing and listening/reading on iOS.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes, freezes, and content not loading (e.g., gray pages, app closing unexpectedly).
  • Download and streaming problems (downloads stall, long wait times, buffering after chapters, or inability to download audio).
  • Repeated login issues (must re-login every few hours or daily; sessions don’t stay remembered).
  • Poor UX and customization options (non-intuitive UI, cannot change font/background, searches not saved, UI elements misplaced).
  • Compatibility issues after iOS updates (app stops working after upgrades like iOS 16).

Compared to Libby this app is slow, not user friendly, not intuitive and often doesn’t work

I use this app 90% to listen to audiobooks. Sometimes the app will freeze as soon as you try to get go the player. „failed to open stream“ with several titles, downloaded or not, can’t really follow the instructions from the website. Restarting the app, logging outredownloading the app and restarting my phone several times worked (maybe it was just time). Hope my library will move to Onleihe 3.0 soon.
