User Reviews

Users praise Reading Trainer for measurable gains in reading speed and comprehension and its structured, goal-driven approach that aids ADHD/executive-function challenges. It is valued educationally for teachers and offers engaging, trackable progress. Common downsides include a painful pricing/subscription model, recurring bugs and performance issues, and occasional UI/compatibility problems. Some users feel benefits vary and some features remain behind a paywall, which affects perceived value.
Pros
  • Measurable gains in reading speed and comprehension with regular use (many users report significant improvements such as doubling speed in days/weeks and higher WPM).
  • Structured program with clear objectives, pacing, and exercises that target speed and comprehension, helpful for ADHD/executive function.
  • Educational value and applicability: teachers recommend it for tests; features like copying text for practice and a 'power reading' mode.
  • Engaging, challenging but not boring UI with simple navigation and visible progress tracking.
  • Accessibility benefits for readers with learning difficulties (e.g., reading comprehension disability) and supportive for diverse learners.
Cons
  • High monthly price and auto-renewal; many reviews describe it as expensive and prefer a lifetime option or free access.
  • Bugs and slow performance, especially after updates (e.g., version 2.0 reported as buggy/slow and long load times).
  • UI/device compatibility issues (e.g., lack of support for iPhone X/XS).
  • Free access is limited or misrepresented; most features require subscription and some users dislike being gated behind a paywall.
  • Mixed results in effectiveness; some users do not yet see the promised speed or comprehension gains.

I use many tools and tactics to subside ADHD and exec dysfunction. This has quickly proven to be the most efficacious.

I truly love this app, so far it’s been great to help me develop my reading without underchallenging or overstimulating me. I feel like every task I do has a clear reason and they’re thoughtfully spaced out between one another. I appreciate the clear communication as to what objectives we are trying to target. I do feel myself progressing in a relatively short amount of time. I’d love to purchase a lifetime subscription, but the price as of now definitely forces me to practice habitually to feel real improvement by the end of the 3 months I paid for. My single nitpick so far (not really a criticism)— please change the names for your milestones. I read 140ish wpm and know that I’m novice so, though I appreciate the support, you can’t label the milestone “Reading PHD” when I’m only 22 Units in (which is only 4 days worth of practicing). I believe they level up way too early and it is the only part of the user experience that bothers me.

This is the best app I have seen for improving reading speed and comprehension. I like how it not only encourages reading speed but improves precise interpretation/observations such has making you focus on small variation in word spelling and letter grouping. There are some sections where numbers a flipped extremely fast but sentences very slow. It seems intuitive that sentences should be moved faster also. It would help if one could upload material and have app force faster reading and comprehension from “real world” documents to improve studying. I imagine with AI coming that will likely occur. I use this almost every day but have not seen the improvement in speed and retention others report. My reading speed with retained comprehension has been about 50 wPm in the one month i have used it. Still now shabby for someone approaching 80. Hope this also fights dementia!!!
