Features & Capabilities

Created during a combat deployment in Afghanistan, Tactical NAV (TACNAV-X) began as a low-cost, highly accurate navigation platform tailored for the U.S. military and to honor fallen service members. It has withstood evaluation against Nett Warrior, ATAK, and BFT to ensure robust performance in austere environments and to support training and field missions.

Its core features include offline mapping, grid-based coordinates (MGRS/UTM/USNG), waypoint plotting with military-style overlays, a fast-azimuth compass (FastLock), and drawing overlays for mission planning. The extension is designed for secure operation without cellular connectivity, and the Department of Defense does not endorse Tactical NAV.

User Reviews

Users praise Tactical NAV for its sub-meter accuracy, reliable offline mapping, and strong field-tested performance. They also value responsive, ongoing support and robust mission-planning features with easy cross-platform sharing. Common drawbacks include update prompts that can block use, drawing tool limitations, missing terrain/sustainment symbols, occasional data loss after crashes, and a few navigation bugs. Overall, it’s regarded as a top-tier military navigation tool with some UI and feature gaps that appear to be work-in-progress.
Pros
  • Extremely accurate and reliable navigation with sub-meter (MGRS-focused) precision, proven in training and field ops.
  • Outstanding developer support and willingness to incorporate user feedback through frequent updates.
  • Strong offline mapping capability enabling operation without connectivity.
  • Robust mission-planning tools: plotting, overlays, drawing, and easy cross-platform sharing (including to Android).
  • Cross-device usability and seamless integration with ATAK workflows, plus overall ease of use.
Cons
  • Recurring in-app update prompts that can render the app unusable until updates complete.
  • Drawing/graphics tools are quirky and limited (no arrows, templates), with editing and grid manipulation improvements needed.
  • Missing sustainment symbols and terrain/topo map options, limiting symbol library and terrain clarity.
  • Data loss/bugs observed after crashes or during point creation; weeks of work can disappear.
  • Occasional navigation bugs like resetting to the middle of the ocean when returning to the app.

TACNAV-X is excellent. The developer (Jon) even responded to my email from the hospital. Unbelievable. I’m super impressed!

I wanted to share my thoughts about this app because I was impressed when Jonathan (Captain Springer) took the time to respond to my email about a couple new features he's working on. This app is excellent. I've verified its accuracy, which rivals the DAGR and Falcon View, and it’s accurate to less than a meter. My mortar guys have used TacNav-X to plan and verify targets during live fire training. All on target. Pretty BA. I completely recommend this app to anyone in the military. And for infantry dudes like myself, this app is an absolute necessity.

Hi Jon, I just wanted to update my review and let you know the latest updates to the app are outstanding. As I mentioned before, I’ve been using TACNAV-X extensively for years now, and the improvements you’ve made are nothing short of impressive. Each update makes the app better and more capable, and it’s clear you’re putting real thought into how it’s used in the field. Keep up the great work, and keep making those of us at Fort Campbell proud. What really stands out is that you listen to our feedback and actually build it into the app — that matters. You’ll always have the support of those of us in 160th SOAR and 5th SFG. Thanks again, Captain. Keep it up. ~ Chief “Night Stalkers Don’t Quit!”
