Overview

Features & Capabilities

MilGPS is a field navigation extension designed for trained navigators using MGRS coordinates. It displays your current location and other info on large screens, allows you to create and organize waypoints into overlays, and navigate to them with an arrow or map.

It visualizes location and waypoints on a map with smooth grid lines and labels, supports Apple/Google online maps or offline MBTiles, multiple location formats (MGRS/USNG/UTM/Lat-Lon/OSNG) and datums (WGS84, NAD27, OSGB36, AGD66, ED50). It also supports GPX import/export, a map ruler tool, and notes about data usage and offline capabilities.

User Reviews

Reviews consistently praise MilGPS for accurate GPS, reliable field performance, and strong plotting/overlay tools with easy sharing/exporting. It’s valued for land navigation, hunting, and cross-map use (Apple/Google Maps, MGRS). The main downsides are the lack of drawing/graphics features (lines, boxes, military symbols) and limited customization (shapes/colors/icons). Users also seek better onboarding/documentation and localization, but overall feedback is highly positive with room for feature expansion.
Pros
  • Extremely accurate GPS with fast lock, reliable in challenging environments (e.g., dense tree cover).
  • Powerful plotting and overlay management: easy to plot, group points, and switch between overlays.
  • Strong sharing/exporting capabilities: export overlays and share with colleagues.
  • General usefulness for land navigation, hunting, and fieldwork; simple to use.
  • Interoperability with maps and support for MGRS; works across devices.
Cons
  • No drawing/graphics tools: cannot draw lines between points, create boxes, or add NATO/military symbols.
  • Limited customization: few options for shapes, colors, and icons; users want more variety.

I absolutely love the app, worth every penny, but I lacks in things like mapping out routes and being able to draw lines and trails. The map doesn’t always have all trails, especially if there’s tree coverage. So to be able to map out my own routes to grids would be amazing. That’s the only thing I can think of that’s lacking. Adding different types of mapping too. More icon, make me be able to map out zones and what not. It’d rate you the same as Avenza, which is much better for mapping. If I wanted a gps, I’d use maps. You need the ability to map things. Especially if you’re targeting military. And add the ability to name areas.
