User Reviews

Users praise Specialty Produce as a useful encyclopedia with recipe links and market-location features, and note its value for produce professionals. However, the dominant theme across multiple reviews is frustration with the shift to a paid subscription (about $25/year) and the limited free access, along with reliability problems like crashes. Overall, usefulness remains, but perceived value has declined for non-paying users due to paywalls and stability concerns.
Pros
  • Encyclopedia-style reference for produce with broad, useful information.
  • Recipes linked to each produce item and the ability to save recipes in a personal cookbook.
  • Location-based discovery of produce near me / share market features to see where to buy produce.
  • Valuable for professionals in the produce industry (e.g., brokers and retail staff) who rely on it for knowledge.
Cons
  • Subscription requirement with an annual price around $25/year, which many users feel reduces value or discourages use.
  • Free version is limited and much content is locked behind the paywall.
  • Reliability issues, including frequent crashes and bugs after updates.

I recall using this app in the past, but when I went to check it out again, it now requires a subscription. I’m deleting the app since I don’t use it often enough to make a subscription worthwhile.

Better free and inclusive information including where to order in a general internet search including one of the new AI applications like Copilot.

Talking about both free version and subscription of the app (not the website). This app seems to be, mainly, an encyclopedia for edible fruits/vegetables/roots/fungi (ie, Wikipedia, but with far less detailed information and not open to user contributions). In the app there is also a locator of sorts, but you can’t really customize where you want to search or how the information is sorted. For example, there is an option to let the app use your phone’s location, but there’s no way to know where it thinks you are or manually fine tune, and the list of produce it shows isn’t necessarily relevant anymore-it’s October as I type, all results, which were arbitrarily listed (not showing by closest to my location) were from July, and I can’t really get much detail beyond that in the app. I could go on, but suffice to say, even though I recognize that people don’t work for free, hence the subscription Specialty Produce wants users to pay, the annual subscription isn’t getting most (maybe Californians who have year round growing and farmer markets) anyone a useful service. Instead of this app, just go to their website if you find their efforts useful; there’s far more there and it’s for free.
