Features & Capabilities

SmallTalk Phonemes is a speech exercise video app. It is designed to help anyone who has suffered a stroke or a traumatic brain injury and presents with aphasia, apraxia, and/or dysarthria. It can also be used by individuals who present similar language impairments.

The series of individual speech-exercise videos shows the tongue and lip movements necessary to produce phonemes in the English language like “g” or “f”.

You can easily rearrange the order of the videos or remove others to make it simpler to focus on key phonemes. Repeat each exercise as often as you would like. Then, reset the app to return to original settings.

User Reviews

Reviews consistently praise SmallTalk Phonemes for its aphasia-friendly approach and mouth-focused phoneme visuals, including real-mouth demonstrations and accurate-sounding isolated-sound models. However, many reviews highlight stability and playback issues (crashes, video lip-sync problems, short videos), startup/navigation failures after updates, and concerns about phoneme notation accuracy.
Pros
  • Valuable therapy-friendly tool for aphasia and other speech disorders; therapists and caregivers report it aids progress.
  • Provides mouth-focused visuals to illustrate phoneme production and pronunciation.
  • Real-mouth pronunciation demonstrations praised for effectiveness.
  • Accurate, focused models for isolated speech sounds.
Cons
  • Frequent stability issues: crashes when tapping sounds or videos, and app stops unexpectedly.
  • Compatibility/OS update problems causing glitches; reviewers report instability after iOS updates.
  • Startup/launch and navigation problems: some users cannot open beyond opening screen or reach the phoneme list.
  • Video playback problems: lip-motion freezes or requires resets; videos may be too short or not continuous.
  • Phoneme notation/accuracy concerns: lack of standard phoneme symbols and some sounds misrepresented (e.g., /r/ vs /er/).
Recent reviews
The app works well but the videos for some of the sounds include a schwa sound after the phoneme. “Buh” for /b/ and “duh” for /d/ etc. I wish these had been produced without the schwa.

Recent update fixed the glitches! Lingraphica apps are great for patients with aphasia or a multitude of speech disorders. Their tech support is amazing. And if your patient has long standing communication issues, you should try a communication device. They will let you try them at no cost (unbelievable but true). I’ve had patient’s speech improve just by using the device but also it’s a great AAC device for adults.

Was fine with previous version, new one doesn’t even get to the list of phonemes...
