Features & Capabilities

Brother iPrint&Scan is a free iOS app that lets you print from and scan to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over a local Wi‑Fi network. Print photos, PDFs, and Office documents directly from your device, or from cloud services, with no computer or driver required.

Advanced features for newer models include image editing, direct faxing, copy-preview, and machine status checks. Scanned files can be saved to Photos or cloud services, and the app automatically discovers compatible devices on your network for quick setup.

User Reviews

Overall sentiment is negative. The most cited issues are unstable connections, poor photo printing with no size controls, app crashes and looping, and missing features/UX improvements (no scan resolution options, no cloud workflows, multiple apps/logins). A few users report basic document printing or scanning on certain printers and some older models still work, but these are not representative. The app needs reliable device discovery, better print sizing controls, fewer app steps, and parity with the PC version to satisfy most users.
Pros
  • Basic printing (documents) works on some Brother models.
  • Scanning is supported and can work on certain devices.
  • Supports older Brother printers, useful for legacy hardware.
  • Some users report successful printing from iPhone when setup is working.
Cons
  • Unreliable printer discovery/connection over Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or USB across many setups.
  • Poor photo printing: no control over photo size, prints full-page, limited size options (e.g., 4x6, 5x7 not available).
  • Frequent stability issues: freezing, crashes, loops, and need to reinstall.
  • Missing essential features and clunky UX: no scan resolution options, no workflows or cloud integration, requires multiple apps/logins.
  • Compatibility problems with newer iOS versions/devices (e.g., reports on iOS 26.x and newer devices).

This app essentially useless and totally outdated — it doesn’t seem to do much of anything itself. Instead, after linking my printer to it, whenever I tried requesting a feature (e.g., checking the printer status, print history, toner remaining, etc.) the app doesn’t do anything itself….it just opens a browser window within the app and tries to do what I asked the app to do via the browser window (but 99 times out of 100, the browser window won’t actually connect to my printer!). If I wanted to check my printer via a series of browsers windows, I wouldn’t need a dedicated printer app from the manufacturer. Come on Brother - it’s 2026, yet this app seems like it’s 15-20 years old in terms of its design and functionality. It should be scrapped completely and replaced with a modern version (BTW, yes, Brother does have modern apps that work fine with SOME printers, but not all of them…. when I used one of the other modern apps with my 2 printers, only one of my printers (the B&W model) was compatible with the other app (even though that printer is many years older than my color printer). My color printer would not work with the modern app, and that other app told me that I needed to download and use this horrible app instead. How dumb.

Until the May 2026 update. Now my printer has disappeared from my network and cannot be located on this or any other app.
