You can start to learn a language with Duolingo, it’ll get you the basics. LingQ is for actually learning the language. You don’t need to learn orthography to start, you might need some basic grammar, and to learn a language well you should definitely talk to some native speakers at some point. But the majority of the learning is just absorbing the language and this is the best way to do it. I can’t read paper novels in Spanish but I can 100% read entire novels using LingQ. I like how motivational it is to see the number of words you know, especially since it’s so easy to add to this number. I can easily add 50 known words in Spanish in a single day. This would take 500+ exercises in Duolingo.
