Features & Capabilities

The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) is a map-centric planner for outdoor photography. It functions as a Sun, Moon, and Milky Way calculator that shows how light will fall on terrain at any location and time, helping you plan at a glance for today or a future shoot. Features include augmented reality scouting, line-of-sight analysis, and a 3D Milky Way overlay to visualize star fields over the map.

Save locations, use multiple map types (including offline maps), and benefit from automatic time zone detection, elevation data, shadow lengths, and celestial events. With precise rise/set times, golden hour planning, and site-to-site distance and bearing calculations, TPE supports sophisticated field work across devices with offline access.

User Reviews

Reviewers consistently praise TPE as a core planning tool for predicting sun, moon, and light angles, enabling effective pre-visualization of shots, especially in unfamiliar locations. It’s lauded for versatility (landscape, events, astronomy, drone work) and strong map integration, AR shading checks, and the ability to save locations. Many consider it worth the price and an essential time-saver. The most persistent drawbacks are Skyfire reliability and forecast accuracy, plus UI/UX frictions (limited map pan/zoom, search) and occasional crashes or platform limits, along with some learning-resource gaps.
Pros
  • Strong sun/moon timing and sunrise/sunset planning for any location, enabling effective pre-visualization.
  • Excellent for location scouting and planning shots in unfamiliar places, with AR/lighting checks.
  • Versatile across photography types (landscape, events, weddings) and astronomy, with good map integration.
  • Easy to use and widely considered worth the price; long-term reliability and value.
  • Ability to save favorite locations and reference them for future shoots.
Cons
  • Skyfire integration is unreliable and frequently inaccurate, with unexpected or unwanted subscriptions.
  • UI/UX issues: limited map zoom/pan, clunky navigation, and poor search.
  • Stability problems: app hangs or crashes when using advanced features like 3D or transit.
  • Cross-platform and data-saving limitations: desktop/mobile syncing and location saving restricted to web.
  • Insufficient tutorials/learning resources to master the app.

This app is an absolute must have for any Landscape Photographer! The first thing I did after getting familiar with the apps controls was to get on the map and Pin, and save all my favorite places, and places I plan on shooting in the future. That way I can use my ipad offline at any of the locations and still be able to use all the calculators for sunrise and set, and moonrise and set. And also be able to track the stars! You will be able to plan when and where you want to shoot months ahead. ABSOLUTLEY INVALUABLE!!!

This is an essential App if you want to plan your photographs beyond “f8 and be there.” There’s nothing wrong with going out and finding photos you love by being in the moment and catching your flow. That’s still the majority of my photography by far. BUT if you want to pre-visualize what a location has to offer TPE is an astounding tool. Especially when you’re making a photo trip to unfamiliar areas. It’s also killer for rolling out in the moment to guide you to a shot you feel is possible if only you can look into the future, even if it’s just an hour from now. Get it. You’ll love it.
