Features & Capabilities

StoryCorps is a storytelling platform focused on recording and sharing the humanity in everyday conversations. Since 2003, its work has sparked meaningful dialogues across the country, reaching nearly 700,000 people. The StoryCorps app brings these stories together: listen to podcasts and watch animations in one place, record conversations in-app or upload audio, join initiatives like Brightness In Black, One Small Step DIY, Military Voices Initiative, and The Great Listen, and prepare interview questions or use our pre-populated prompts. You can also search the Online Archive for conversations on themes that matter to you.

Listen, honor, and share with the StoryCorps App. Major support from Jane Phillips Donaldson & William H. Donaldson. For more information, visit storycorps.org/app.

User Reviews

Pros: easy to use, strong archiving, and helpful for recording family interviews. Cons: recurring reliability issues—bugs that delete/corrupt recordings, upload/publish and login problems, freezing, and confusing sharing settings. Overall, StoryCorps offers meaningful personal value but struggles with stability and UX, hindering a consistently smooth user experience.
Pros
  • Easy to use for recording.
  • Cloud archiving preserves recordings for future generations.
  • Great for recording interviews with family and preserving memories.
Cons
  • Bugs and crashes that delete or corrupt recordings (e.g., freezing on publish).
  • Upload/publish errors and login/auth problems.
  • Frequent freezing and slow performance that wastes time.
  • Confusing sharing/privacy settings that require publishing to share and don’t always save.

I wish I had started using this earlier, because it’s so easy to archive recordings to the cloud.

8 years ago, I recorded the only interview of my grandfather in the StoryCorp app. My whole family was there and listened with excitement, knowing that we’d be able to come back to this memory for decades. I logged in for the first time since the recording only to find that StoryCorps had not preserved the audio file properly. It’s completely ruined, just playing a snippet like a broken record. I can’t believe this app failed to do the one thing it was supposed to do. Unbelievable. Heartbreaking. I’d give this 0 stars if I could.

I love listening to the amazing stories that are available on this app and I love that I can interview my loved ones and add those stories to the collection!
