User Reviews

PeakFinder is widely praised for ease of use, offline data access, and strong peak identification with names/elevations, plus sun/moon visuals and photo overlays. The main drawbacks are orientation inaccuracies, regional data errors, offline download limits, and occasional feature issues. Overall it’s a versatile tool for backcountry and travel, with responsive support and room for improvement in accuracy and offline map handling.
Pros
  • Easy to use and intuitive, with versatility for field use or couch use.
  • Large offline database and offline data download capability; not a subscription.
  • Accurate peak identification with mountain names and elevations, plus horizon overlays and photo overlays.
  • Sun and Moon times and real-time horizon visualization for planning camps and sunrises.
  • Responsive developer support and updates, including fixes for older versions.
Cons
  • Persistent orientation/compass misalignment, causing large accuracy errors.
  • Regional data inaccuracies (wrong peak names or identifications in NM, Ireland, Canada).
  • Offline map download limitations (cannot download all maps at once).
  • Some features occasionally don’t work as expected (photo overlay) and location updates may lag.
  • Occasional concerns about value for money.

I have been using the app for about 10 years and it used to work great. Past year it was unable to download data from the servers. I had to purchase again which means it is not free of recurring costs.
