The essential tool for all musicians playing traditional Irish, Scots, Welsh and Breton music!

Ever sat in a trad session and wondered what was the name of that great tune someone just played? Well now you can search a database of over 22,000 tunes from your iPhone/iPod BY PLAYING!

Hold your device up to a melody instrument such as the tin-whistle, flute, concertina, uilleann pipes, accordion or banjo, hit record and the melody will be extracted and submitted to the tunepal.org search engine for matching.

Matching tunes are downloaded to your device, where you can view and edit the notation or the stave, email the tune, post it to facebook or play it back using the high quality playback engine based on ABC2MIDI and FMOD.

User Reviews

Users love Tunepal for accurate tune recognition, usefulness in sessions, and a large tune library. It’s also appreciated for offline use and privacy, and some praise its intuitive design and overall value. However, the app is plagued by crashes during recording, search, or playback; long periods without updates and compatibility issues with newer iOS versions and older devices; backend outages that disrupt tune lookups; microphone access problems; and limited support. The concept is strong, but stability and maintenance remain major concerns.
Pros
  • Accurate tune recognition, especially during sessions
  • Very useful for identifying tune names in Irish Ceili sessions
  • Large tune library with hundreds of tunes
  • Intuitive design and solid performance in live use
  • Good value for money; the HD version works well
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and instability across recording, searching, and playback
  • Long periods without updates and compatibility issues with newer iOS versions and older devices
  • Backend outages and reliance on online services for tune lookups and submissions
  • Microphone access/compatibility problems on some devices
  • Limited support and maintenance; communication mainly via Facebook

I love the app but have to restart my iPhone to stop the crash

Useful app at sessions. It doesn’t always find the right tune, but I wouldn’t expect it to. The accuracy is pretty darn good though. Really happy the app was finally updated and now works offline! I also like that the app does not collect any personal data…all apps should be that way.

It appears this app had not been updated in quite some time, and the record/analyze features no longer function.
