Features & Capabilities

Theodolite is a comprehensive AR viewfinder that integrates a compass, dual-axis inclinometer, rangefinder, GPS, maps, a nav calculator, and geo-overlay photo/video capture. Since its 2009 debut, it has been used by millions of users for land measurement, outdoor navigation, sightseeing, and field surveys.

Key capabilities include offline Outdoors maps with topo contours, multiple coordinate systems (MGRS, UTM, Maidenhead, US National Grid, etc.), data logging with CSV/KML export, and metadata embedding on images. AR layers show sun, moon, planets, and Polaris, plus an optional US Mountain Summits layer; users can share markers and navigation points, and enable team tracking for up to 20 collaborators. The app supports extensive data sharing, mapping, and inspection workflows used by surveyors, geologists, engineers, first responders, and adventurers.

User Reviews

Reviewers praise Theodolite for its versatility, accuracy, and clean UI, with strong photo/data capture and advanced features. It’s widely used across surveying, navigation, astronomy, and field documentation. However, multiple users report stability issues after updates (crashes/black screens), inconsistent camera controls (placement and visibility in bright sunlight), and occasional display artifacts. Overall, it’s a powerful, reliable tool when working, with notable strengths in measurement precision and data capture; refining stability and UI readability would further enhance its value for professional outdoor users.
Pros
  • Versatile field tool across surveying, navigation, astronomy, disaster response, and film-location work.
  • High accuracy and precision for altitude, direction, true north, declination, and angles.
  • Clear UI with intuitive layouts and ease of use.
  • Excellent photo/data capture integration with coordinates tagging and easy sharing.
  • Advanced features such as AI-assisted mountain naming and sun-position calculations.
Cons
  • Stability issues after updates; crashes or black screens on some devices.
  • Camera controls suffer from awkward placement and poor visibility in bright light.
  • Display/readability artifacts introduced by updates.

Update. If I hated the iPhone, I’d buy a used one just to have this app. I use this when building antennas, and any structure to check for plumb, level and height. On the range for distances when initially zeroing a rifle scope.

We used Theodolite while responding to oil spills along the East Coast of Vancouver Island. The USCG DRAT from the 13th CG District introduced us to Theodolite and it’s powerful trig features using GPS, angles and calculated distances. The photo background is a great asset also. This app is very easy to use. With a little practice it becomes a powerful field tool.
