Features & Capabilities

Make mispronunciations a thing of the past with the world’s most accurate and comprehensive pronunciation dictionary.

Unlike most apps, no synthetic pronunciation is used—every word is carefully researched and professionally recorded, with real human voice audio. It includes over 180,000 words and phrases, a comprehensive range of medical, legal, scientific terms and industry jargon, and even current names; it also covers heteronyms (like tear, dove, close) correctly. Features include auto-complete and spelling suggestions, pronunciation history, Favourites, and the ability to search definitions online. Note: An internet connection is required to download audio and perform new searches, as the database is too large to download and is continually updated.

User Reviews

Reviews consistently praise Howjsay for clear, human-like pronunciation and a large wordbase, plus cross-device usefulness and good value. However, common concerns center on pricing/paywalls, inconsistent audio quality, paid-feature access issues, and a desire for browser/OS integration. Responding to feature requests appears slow for some users. Overall, strong educational value is tempered by pricing, reliability, and integration frustrations.
Pros
  • Pronunciations are clear and accurate and spoken by a real person with enunciation, with multiple pronunciations (e.g., American vs British) when available.
  • Broad, comprehensive word base that covers many terms, including less common ones, making it a valuable learning tool.
  • Useful across devices and platforms (iPhone and other devices), with longstanding usefulness and good compatibility with older iOS versions.
  • Perceived good value for money, with reviewers noting a modest price and that it is worth the cost.
Cons
  • Pricing model relies on a subscription/paywall for basic functionality, which many users oppose and cite as a major drawback; requests for a one-time fee instead are common.
  • Audio quality can be inconsistent, with some pronunciations sounding tinny or synthetic, while others are clear and natural, leading to mixed experiences.
  • Access issues related to paid features (e.g., Unlimited Access) not working or being gated behind the paywall, causing frustration for paying users.
  • Lack of easy browser/OS integration (no extension or long-press pronunciation option in other apps), which makes quick lookup less convenient.
  • Some users feel developers are slow to add words or respond to feature requests, affecting perceived responsiveness and updates.

First word I type in it has no idea how to pronounce and says it can’t find it. Totally disappointed

Though I like the app a great deal, why does the translator have an accent? I haven’t used the app lately, but, today I did and was surprised to hear an Italian accent. Where on the app can I change it to plain English.

Hey, rather than a app, it would be more functional and useful to have this as an extension or script that appears in the options menus for the bowers, and for the long press on selected text. It’s just silly to have open an app or website. When, I really should be able to highlight/select the word and either/both long press and have “pronounce” as an option, like “look up”, “search the web”, etc. And/or, the browser menu that contains “pronounce/howjsay” as an option, such as, print, look up, etc., is an option.
