Overview

Features & Capabilities

Sun Seeker is a comprehensive solar tracking and compass app that visualizes the sun’s hourly direction, its equinox and solstice paths, sunrise and sunset times, twilight windows, and sun shadow. It combines a flat compass view with a 3D AR overlay to display the sun’s current position and path, a camera pointer to guide you toward the sun, and a map view with hourly elevations and arrows. You can pick any date and location (40,000+ cities offline supported) to see sun position for that day, along with civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight times.

It includes a surveyor view showing solar direction for each hour, and optional sun event notifications for golden hour, blue hour, twilight periods, or sun at a given heading. The app is ideal for photographers, cinematographers, real estate shoppers, drivers, campers, gardeners, and architects who plan around sunlight.

User Reviews

Sun Seeker is highly regarded for its 3-D view, ease of use, and versatile sun-tracking data that aids gardening, solar planning, photography, and real estate. Users appreciate its comprehensive sun-path information and year-round planning benefits. However, recurring issues include compass inaccuracies, bugs and location prompts, and outdated map data, plus occasional interpretability challenges. Overall, it’s a powerful, valuable tool for many workflows, but reliability and data freshness improvements would enhance the experience.
Pros
  • 3-D view visualization is a standout feature that many users praise.
  • Easy to use with a data-rich, intuitive interface that helps users understand sun positions.
  • Very versatile and useful across multiple real-world tasks (gardening, solar panel planning, photography, real estate, landscaping).
  • Accurate sun-path information and daylight planning for different times of day and year.
  • Long-term value and usefulness; users feel it’s a worthwhile purchase and rely on it across various projects.
Cons
  • Compass/direction accuracy issues that can mislead orientation (e.g., compass reporting west as south).
  • Frequent bugs or instability, including location permission prompts and other reliability problems.
  • Outdated or inaccurate satellite/map data that doesn’t reflect current structures or environments (e.g., empty lots).
  • Some users find the data difficult to interpret without guidance, indicating a learning curve for new users.
Recent reviews
Sun Seeker has a real elegant simplicity in its design and functionality that is very impressive. Every function is useful. The biggest issue is the inability to zoom in and out of the 3D mode, it would make it so much easier to get an overall perspective especially on the phone. And to a lesser degree the map could use a weather overlay so you could see how things like cloud cover were affecting the topography, but frankly this needs to be implemented on the Wind Seeker app first and then maybe added here.
