User Reviews

Many reviews accuse Backgammon NJ of biased RNG and an AI that knows future rolls, yielding unfair advantages—especially late in games with frequent doubles. While some praise the UI, customization, and delay-prevention features, the dominant sentiment is frustration over perceived cheating and reliability issues. A few note performance glitches and a significant price increase. Overall, the positive aspects are modest compared with widespread concerns about fairness and stability.
Pros
  • Smooth, intuitive gameplay with a clean interface.
  • Customization options for gameplay.
  • Time controls (90-second rule) help prevent slow play.
  • Long-term appeal; some players have used the app for years and still return.
Cons
  • Perceived rigging: the AI appears to know upcoming dice and outcomes, making rolls non-random.
  • End-game bias: the AI frequently receives powerful doubles at the end to win.
  • The game seems to look ahead and play optimally based on future rolls, undermining fairness.
  • Performance issues: clunky piece movement, occasional lockups, and stability problems.
  • Recent price hike: charging around $8 for the app after updates.

Great app for improving your backgammon skills because it clearly shows the best possible moves and helps you understand strategy. The interface is smooth and easy to use. My only complaint is that the dice rolls often feel skewed in favor of the computer, especially in key moments, which can make matches frustrating. If the dice felt more balanced, this would be an excellent app.

Horrible. Cheats both ways which I’m not looking for either way. Want my money back

I have used this app for years; deleting in frustration, reinstalling because I don’t know of a better. I am just tired now. The perfectly non-random roll generator—look at Jimmy’s evidence. It’s just not a fun challenge to try to beat a rigged engine anymore. Thanks for the years of it. May 2026 Update: And now the dude is charging $8 for the app.—Just know that you will learn but never win.
