User Reviews

TapTunes offers a visually rich grid/album-wall, gesture-driven navigation, and strong customization, plus a random-album widget that aids discovery. However, reviews consistently flag five downsides: it relies on Apple Music and can’t play local files; stability issues such as freezing and lag; missing core features like playlists/queue management; a 500-album limit in the grid view; and no dark mode option, with brightness changes frustrating users who want a true dark theme.
Pros
  • Visually appealing grid/album-wall layout that displays many albums with attractive background effects.
  • Gesture-based navigation and quick, intuitive controls.
  • Strong customization with multiple display modes (grid, stacked) plus a random-album widget.
  • Supports exploring and organizing music via album art and varied views for discovery.
Cons
  • Relies on Apple Music and cannot play local music; no standalone playback.
  • Frequent performance issues, including freezing and slow responsiveness.
  • Lacks core playlist features like Play Next, Add to Playlist, or queue management.
  • Grid view is limited to around 500 albums; users want more.
  • No dark mode option; brightness changes reduce usability at night.

Like the app but as someone who keeps albums organized I wish we could get that as an option too , also if we could get a full dark mode background would be great as well, other than that really like the player reminds me of iOS 6 music player.

The grid album view lets me so many more of my albums than Apple Music, Spotify, or YouTube music ever do, and the blurred background color based on the detail of your album looks nice. Everything is quickly accessible, and simple double tap and swipe gestures make some actions faster that are more cumbersome in the other apps. I really like how minimal it feels w/o cutting out core functionality. This app actually *feels* clean, and I really appreciate that. Will there be an update to optionally show more than 500 albums on the grid view? My library isn't there yet, but it's getting close.

This was my favorite music app because it had a dark gray background I could use at night to listen to music when going to bed and not expose myself to bright blue light computer screen which disrupts circadian rhythms and makes it harder to fall asleep. Now in the latest 2022 version the background is bright cream white and there does not appear to be a Setting to change it back to dark theme mode. If you want to provide bright background as the display default that's fine but at least give your existing users a preference option to change it back to original dark background. Yet another iOS app I relied on for years then a change was made that makes it unusable for my purposes, oh well, DELETE!
