User Reviews

Users praise Japan Transit Planner for easy route planning, real-time data, and a rich feature set that helps with travel in Japan. However, many repeatedly report update-related issues: route errors, station-search failures, slower performance, and intrusive ads with paid features. Language changes also cause confusion. Despite these cons, responsive support and the app’s longstanding reliability remain strong positives for most travelers.
Pros
  • Easy route planning and travel-time estimation, helping travelers plan efficiently.
  • Real-time data and up-to-date timetables that aid accurate navigation.
  • Comprehensive feature set including multiple route options (fastest/cheapest), fare diagrams, in-between stations listing, and romaji support.
  • Longstanding, trusted app that is widely used and valued for both daily transit and intercity travel (Shinkansen planning).
  • Responsive customer support that fixes glitches quickly when issues arise.
Cons
  • Post-update reliability issues: route errors, incorrect results, or failure to locate stations (app behaving as if unsupported).
  • Performance problems after updates: slower speeds and timeouts when calculating routes.
  • Ads and monetization: intrusive ads and the need to subscribe to Plus for features.
  • Language/interface changes causing feature loss or awkward language switching (English added but not always beneficial, and some language settings/configuration issues).
  • Station search failures and misrouting (e.g., choosing the wrong line or failing to find current location), plus timetables not always staying up to date.

The locations on the ‘from’ should automatically update at each stop … this would be helpful to a lot of people since missed trains are common during rush hour

I live in Japan, and I’ve been using this app for a long time with no issues at all. But recently, I’ve been getting “Route error” messages on certain usual routes, and only getting local train options on others, even though I recently upgraded to Premium (hoping that that was the issue) and even though I’ve set my route options to “prefer direct train”. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the app, but the issue still persists. Any suggestions from the app users or creators? UPDATE: After contacting the app creators, they quickly replied and figured out the glitch. They have fixed the issue and it works as normal now. Very good and prompt customer service! I’ve changed my rating to 5 stars. Thank you to the customer service team for quickly finding the glitch and fixing the app.

The app is generally accurate but insists on giving unwanted information. If I enter JR Shuntokumichi as a departure or destination it always provides the timetable for Kintetsu Shuntokumichi first. If I want Kintetsu I’ll ask for it.
