Description:

EyeChart is a pocket vision screener: randomized Snellen, Sloan, Tumbling E, and Landolt C charts to offer a rough but useful screen of visual acuity. Simply press a button to randomize the entire eye chart, or touch an individual line of the chart to randomize that line. Swipe right for the chart selector.

Eye care professionals around the world use Snellen Eye Charts to measure visual acuity. However, patients often memorize the classic Snellen chart, leading to less accurate vision measurements. Enter EyeChart! Though this unique, pocket-sized randomizable eye chart should not be used as a primary visual acuity measuring tool, it can provide a handy rough vision screen when a chart is not available, or it can be used to complement static, wall-based Snellen charts.

Subscription:

In addition to our free features, EyeChart offers a subscription to exclusive paid features, including the Randomizable Near Vision Chart, Line Isolation, Amsler Grid, and Single Optotype Charts! The subscription costs $0.99 per month of access, and is available through an auto-renewing subscription which will renew each month for your convenience until you choose to turn it off. Please let us know if you have any questions about your subscription at eyechartapp@gmail.com.

User Reviews

EyeChart is praised as a portable, easy-to-use bedside tool with quick chart generation and pediatric/non-English options, and it's free to use. However, reliability and accuracy issues persist: some devices cause unresponsiveness or failure to load, charts can be mis-sized on certain phones, and the randomized content can hinder consistent assessments. Overall, it’s a useful clinical utility when it works, but not consistently dependable across devices and situations.
Pros
  • Portable and handy for bedside vision checks in busy EDs and clinics.
  • Easy to use with a quick, single-tap method to generate a new chart.
  • Offers a symbol chart for pediatric or non-English-speaking patients.
  • Free to use and does not require mandatory signup.
  • Useful for presbyopia checks and on-the-go visual acuity testing.
Cons
  • Occasional unresponsiveness or failure to load the chart on some devices.
  • Accuracy and sizing issues on certain devices (e.g., XS mis-sizing; bottom row readable from far).
  • Device compatibility problems on some phones leading to non-functionality (e.g., older iPhones).
  • Chart content appears highly randomized, making it harder to confirm readings.

Great app except there is too much randomization making it harder to use. There should be five or six possiblities so screener knows if reading is correct. As is, the screener must look at the phone every time to see letters being displayed and remeasure before moving on.

As an ER RN sometimes you need a portable Snellen chart on the fly! This gives me options for those patients that may not know how to read, which I love. And by the way, you do NOT need to enter your email to proceed. It asks “if you’d like to receive” enter your email, otherwise just hit the ‘begin now’ button & you’ll get the charts. Great app!
