User Reviews

TN5250 is valued for portable, on-the-go AS/400 access, letting IT admins run 5250 sessions from iPad/iPhone via VPN and often replacing a laptop for remote troubleshooting. Reviewers praise its feature set and usefulness for quick admin tasks. Repeated drawbacks include weak support for external keyboards, a troublesome keyboard layout change (missing or relocated Enter key) that hurts efficiency, and session multitasking issues such as losing sessions when switching apps or updates that break connectivity. Landscape mode hides keys, further hurting usability and reliability.
Pros
  • Portable, on-the-go AS/400 access via VPN, allowing IT admins to work without carrying a laptop.
  • Valued for quick admin tasks and troubleshooting while away from a PC.
  • Built-in 5250 feature set (function keys/macros) that improves efficiency for common tasks.
  • Generally reliable for basic emulation, providing essential access when needed.
Cons
  • Weak support for external keyboards (Apple/Bluetooth); no reliable keyboard input or limited mapping.
  • Enter key is missing or relocated on the main screen, reducing efficiency.
  • Sessions do not persist when multitasking or switching apps; app can drop the connection.
  • Updates can break connectivity, reducing overall reliability.
  • Landscape mode hides parts of the keyboard, worsening usability.

It works as long as you don’t want to use any Apple keyboards like the Magic or Smart keyboards. It used to work like a year or so ago, you could hit the keyboard button, select wireless, and it worked. I have been all over setups and can’t find anything to help. I can’t be productive if I have to hold my iPad in my lap and use the iOS keyboard.

I have used this app on my iPhone before, but it does not respond to physical keyboard input.

This app went from five stars to a one star. The enter key is now gone on the top right of the screen and you have to swipe through the keyboard to find it. You put the most used key at the end of the list. It is so inefficient now with the placement of the enter key it is unusable for efficiency. Not anywhere near the page up and down key. Makes no sense at all. I challenge whoever made this decision to login and try using your app without being frustrated the whole time.
