Overview

Features & Capabilities

Aiko is a Chrome extension offering high-quality on-device speech-to-text transcription. It uses OpenAI Whisper running locally on your device, so nothing leaves your machine. It supports 100+ languages and can export transcripts as subtitles. It prioritizes accuracy and includes a word-replacement feature to fix common mistakes.

Notes and limitations: there is no live transcription while recording and there is no speaker detection. The app is powered by Whisper and whisper.cpp. Privacy is preserved since processing happens offline. A trial is available on the website.

User Reviews

Users praise Aiko for strong on-device transcription and privacy, plus its usefulness for daily tasks and meetings on newer Macs. However, repeated reliability problems (crashes, hangs), slowness on Intel Macs, inconsistent transcription quality, compatibility concerns, and price/value criticisms dominate the feedback.
Pros
  • Strong transcription accuracy and quality when it runs correctly.
  • On-device/offline transcription with strong privacy (no cloud processing).
  • Versatile for daily use across meetings, writing, and podcasts.
  • Solid performance on newer Apple hardware (e.g., Mac mini M1, MacBook Pro)
Cons
  • Reliability issues: app often crashes, freezes, or fails to start and finish transcriptions.
  • Very slow processing and long transcription times, especially on Intel Macs.
  • Inconsistent/incorrect transcription results (repeated words, misheard phrases, incoherence).
  • Intel Mac compatibility problems and late warnings about incompatibility.
  • Perceived high price / value concerns (cost versus results).

Aiko is one of the most useful apps I’ve added to my workflow. The interface is clean, intuitive, and refreshingly minimal—there’s no clutter, just a tool that does exactly what it promises. What sets Aiko apart for me is its commitment to local processing. Being able to keep both my audio recordings and transcriptions on-device provides a level of privacy and control that is increasingly rare. The transcription quality is excellent, setup is effortless, and the app stays out of the way so I can focus on my work. Simple, fast, reliable, and privacy-focused. Highly recommended.

I paid, I downloaded, I opened it, and I'm confused about how to use it. You capture one note, you don't know where it went, then you start to record another thing, and you don't know where the first note went. It's so confusing. I really regret paying for this thing. Never pay for something you cannot try ever again.
