With over 400 vocabulary words and illustrations, 700 practice sentences, 100 everyday phrases, multiple reading and listening comprehension exercises and over 20 read along books, ‘Aha Pūnana Leo’s Kīpaepae app was designed to be used as a supplement to our in-person Hui Kīpaepae ‘ohana classes or as a standalone practice tool for any learner of ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i.

The app features mini-lessons, practice exercises and quizzes with personal stats tracking streaks and points earned along with a leaderboard for our Pūnana Leo and community members. Choose a male or female voice to help you work through the practice exercises.

This app was created to provide our Pūnana Leo parents with a strong foundation from which they can build upon to increase the possibility that ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i will become the primary language of communication within the ‘ohana over the course of their child’s K-12 Hawaiian Medium Education (HME) school career.

Certain functions like the Leaderboard requires an internet connection.

It’s fairly well structured and easy to use. It does not explain anything though. It doesn’t explain rules, patterns or grammar. It gives you vocabulary, phrases etc and tests you on it, but it never explains anything. Once you get further along in the course you have to look for patterns yourself to understand why particular words are used. Another thing that would be helpful is a comparison of words with a similar base. A lot of us grew up with parents using Hawaiian words for certain nouns or verbs, so it’s a lot easier to learn new words like rice cooker if there’s an association to other similar words, like rice. It’s a great app, it’s just not set for comprehensive learning.

My 5 year old son is the first of our family to olelo Hawaii. I downloaded this app to learn so that our ohana can support him in his learning. This app is awesome our ohana has learned so many everyday vocabulary words and phrases in just 1 week. We are grateful !❤️
