User Reviews

Users praise Pixelfed for being ad-free, with a clean, simple UI and an open-source, federated approach that supports private, self-hosted use and a nostalgic light-weight photo-sharing vibe. However, recurring issues dominate feedback: login and signup failures, frequent crashes and slow performance, and regular outages or service unavailability. Several reviewers also report limited or slow developer support and feature gaps like video support and hashtag muting. Overall, it has strong foundations but reliability needs improvement.
Pros
  • Ad-free experience with a clean, simple UI.
  • Open-source and federated, enabling self-hosted, privacy-focused use.
  • Nostalgic, lightweight photo-sharing vibe with a clean interface.
  • Stories feature added and appreciated by users.
Cons
  • Recurring login and signup issues (invalid verification codes, login loops, inability to sign in).
  • Frequent crashes and slow performance (app crashes on launch, lag, loading delays).
  • Regular outages or the app being down / unavailable.
  • Limited developer support / slow responses to bug reports and inquiries.
  • Missing core features or enhancements (video support, muting hashtags) as common feature requests.

We desperately need an alternative to IG. Unfortunately this one doesn’t work. Have tried to create an account for a month. It just doesn’t work. It should be a simple fix, why isn’t it fixed by now? Hmm

I’d love to try the app but it took several minutes to load the log in page and then after I put in credentials, it looped back to the login screen again. I can’t get past that point. Reviews from a month ago say this was fixed but it doesn’t seem like it. Pixelfed as a platform is great when it works. But on mobile or desktop it seems to be down a lot 😢

you were fun while you lasted! reminded me of VSCO-era instagram, but the last 6 months it hasn’t been able to load at all. so sad, time to offload from my phone 💔
