User Reviews

Users praise Paperback as a free, ad-free manga reader with a strong extension ecosystem and clean iOS UI, but repeatedly report reliability problems: source loading failures, flaky Komga syncing, and weak support. Ongoing maintenance issues and updates that break extensions, plus confusing/hidden settings, contribute to a mixed overall experience despite its popularity among power users.
Pros
  • Free and ad-free with no IAP.
  • Supports a wide range of sources via community extensions and repos (Discord/GitHub).
  • Clean UI and good organization for reading on iOS.
  • Longstanding popularity and strong endorsement from dedicated users.
Cons
  • Source loading failures across many sources and pages.
  • Komga integration is unreliable: login may work but token errors and sync failures.
  • Support is difficult to get and largely Discord-based with outdated or scarce guidance.
  • Ongoing maintenance concerns: updates can break extensions and compatibility with newer iOS/Komga versions.
  • UI/Settings inconsistencies: features missing or moved, e.g., external sources option on iOS 18, sometimes blank screens.
Recent reviews
Was great when it worked. But now it seems almost all sources will throw a loading error these days.

Would love the ability to download chapters in the background and for the reader to remember how zoomed in I am for each page so that I don’t have to keep zooming in when advancing to the next page on smaller screen devices.

The library sync feature for komga does not work no matter what i do. Every single action in this app is over-convoluted, and not explained in the faq. The support for the app is entirely non existent, with you needing to join their discord only to see most help threads being ignored or unsolved, with the actual devs rarely providing help at all. I fought this for an hour before giving up, meanwhile this other komga app i just tried i got running perfectly in 2 minutes.
