Features & Capabilities

Sound Meter (Decibel) is a lightweight Chrome extension that measures environmental noise in real time. It presents decibel values with a user-friendly gauge, a live reference, and a responsive graph so you can quickly assess current noise levels while browsing.

Save and review your measurements over time with min/avg/max values and a history log. Note that the built-in microphone is device-limited, and very loud sounds (around 110 dB) may not be captured accurately; use this as a handy auxiliary tool rather than a precise sound level meter.

User Reviews

Users largely praise the app for being free, easy to use, and capable of showing room decibels. However, the reviews frequently cite reliability problems: readings are often inaccurate or too low, the app can crash at loud levels, and language quality is poor. Overall, it’s a useful casual tool, but consistency, stability, and polish need improvement.
Pros
  • Works and is easy to use; the meter is sensitive
  • Free with no subscription and has a simple, unobtrusive interface
  • Provides real-time decibel readings in the room for basic noise awareness
  • Useful in practical tasks (e.g., finding leaks, understanding how loud things are)
Cons
  • Readings are often inaccurate or noticeably lower than other meters
  • Crashes/forces close at higher sound levels or danger zones
  • Spelling and language issues (e.g., consistently misspelling 'quiet') undermine usability
  • Some users report the app's readings don’t match real-world environments or other meters

Sometimes it is not very correct and my room is a quiet room but it is 70 or more

Me and my friend Coley tried this and it was not accurate. I was talking a little bit loud and it said I was 120 in danger but whenever we try doing it outside and screaming, it only went up to like 110. This thing is not accurate at all, and it does not work.
