Features & Capabilities

A deceptively simple board game with brutal strategic depth. Four AI difficulties, local and online play, and a built-in tutorial to get started fast.

Welcome to On The L-ine, a deeply strategic 4x4 board game inspired by Edward de Bono's classic "L game". Easy to learn in a minute, a lifetime to master.

Each player controls an L-shaped piece, and the two neutral pieces are shared. On your turn, move your L piece to a new spot, then optionally shift a neutral piece. You lose when you have no legal placement. That's it, and yet the game is brutally deep.

GAME MODES • Computer: Four AI difficulty levels, topped by Champion, an AI that has never been beaten • Local: Hand the device to a friend for a tense hot-seat match • Online: Create a private room to play friends anywhere, or jump into the public queue

A built-in tutorial teaches you the rules in under a minute. Play offline or online, anywhere.

I applaud the effort. This is the only De Bono’s L-game on iOS. The graphics and usability is good. I really want to see the final position after the game is over, unfortunately it gets covered by a new game prompt. Now about computer’s play. It is lame. It follows the boring strategy from one of the books covering this game. It never goes to corners while there are multiple neutral moves. The game is not hard to calculate completely 4 moves deep with mini-max approach and proper caching for speed. One of the best variations to make the game fun (see Wikipedia) is to get points, 1-3 for taking a corner position, 4 points for making opponent stuck.

Such a fun game to play! I enjoy the various game modes! It can be challenging at times but that’s part of the fun! The tutorial was great and helped me learn how to play! I need to practice a bit, but I will beat that computer if it’s the last thing I do! 10/10 would recommend!
