Recollect - Journal & Diary

Private AI & Mood Tracking

Features & Capabilities

Recollect is private AI journaling app. It uses on-device machine learning to safely and privately help you journal. It creates prompts for the people in your life. It suggests photos you might want to write about.

We designed Recollect because we love journaling. The app is designed to help you journal. All over the app, little suggestions will appear that are meant to help you write more. We use on-device machine learning to power our intelligent features. That means that all your data is 100% private and never sent anywhere.

• AI prompts about your life and your relationships • Private on-device AI helps suggest photos or videos you might be likely to write about. • Prompts are personalized and intelligent. They'll even ask you about specific people in your life. "Are you still angry at your boss?" • Reminders help you maintain a consistent habit • You can easily attach videos, audio, or Live Photos to your entries. • Home Screen widget prompts • For You Recommendations: Helps find entries you would be likely to read about • Map/Calendar/Photo/List views for past entries • The design is beautiful for all entries. If you write a lot or just a little: every entry is still gorgeous. • Unlimited Journals: think of these as folders or books • Tags: Easily tag entries so you can find them later • People: Automatically tag your entries by the people you write about.. Kind of like how you would tag a face in a photo. • Import entries from Day One

Private and Safe • Synced with iCloud • Supports end-to-end encryption • FaceID/TouchID and Passcode

User Reviews

Pros: robust features (multiple journals, media, tags), helpful prompts and memory-recovery, easy import from Day One and a calendar view with photos, plus a clean UI and privacy focus. Cons: crashes and buggy UI, data loss or load failures, unreliable import/sync (Day One/iCloud), pricing confusion between lifetime and subscription, and limited support responsiveness. Overall, feature-rich and engaging for journaling, but stability and support issues recur in multiple reviews.
Pros
  • Rich feature set: multiple journals, media attachments (photos, audio, video), and robust organization using people/places/tags.
  • Helpful prompts and memory-friendly features, including smart prompts and context-driven questions.
  • Smooth import options from Day One and other apps, plus a calendar view with photos to revisit memories.
  • Clean, unobtrusive UI that supports journaling in the moment.
  • Privacy-focused approach with no data collection (on-device processing capabilities).
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and stability issues across devices (iPad, M1, etc.).
  • Data loss or entries failing to load or appear blank in the timeline.
  • Unreliable imports/sync with Day One and iCloud (upload failures, sync problems).
  • Pricing confusion around lifetime vs subscription and broken lifetime promises.
  • Poor or limited support responsiveness (difficulty contacting developers, disabled Help option).

Some functionality works, some - not so much. AI…? Not sure what it’s supposed to do outside of the stock iOS “what did you eat for breakfast today” type prompts. I’ve tried interacting via the supposed chat and gotten nothing but a small “AI cancelled”. I’ve tried contacting the dev but gotten no response. I guess if you’re looking for a (very) basic journaling app at an inexpensive cost, Recollect might slip by, but there are better options out there.

I love this app! It has so many little features that make it better than the other journal apps I’ve tried. I’m far more likely to stick with journaling now, and it’s easier to go back and see what I’ve written in the past.

I went to use this, got the lifetime, which I want a refund for at this point because that was a waste of money. I can’t even upload anything from Day One. It crashes every single time I attempt this and iCloud sync doesn’t work either. Worse product in existence.
