User Reviews

Reviews praise VHS Synth for lush presets, lo-fi 80s vibes, and ease of use, but repeatedly criticize the subscription model, DAW/AUv3 compatibility issues, and trackers added by new owners. Users report loss of access to banks after updates and frustration with updates that break AUv3 integration. Overall, strong sound design is offset by monetization and compatibility challenges.
Pros
  • Excellent presets and patches with lush sounds (including choir and bell patches)
  • Strong lo-fi vibe and nostalgic 80s character that many users love
  • Easy to use and tweak presets, making it approachable
  • VHS Synth offers distinctive, retro sound design that stands out
  • Overall solid standalone app with useful, high-quality sounds
Cons
  • Subscription model locks content and previously purchased banks behind a paywall
  • DAW/AUv3 compatibility issues (GarageBand/Logic/AMU) and extension breakages after updates
  • Privacy/tracking concerns due to new ownership and added trackers
  • Updates sometimes break projects or access to banks/presets, causing frustration and re-purchases

I’ve never seen any other synth with the option to rent it weekly, and this synth is not worth a monthly or even yearly subscription at any cost, compared to the other iOS synths, it should be what the weekly cost is to just buy it outright. You can get synth one (both regular and j6) and a free lo fi/tape effect and get better results that aren’t just playing back multi samples of stuff that was run through a tape vst.

They made the newest few updates break when putting it in GarageBand so you’d have to buy their new subscription based app. Pretty scummy.

I love the lo-fi vibes. This is one of my favorites. So far I’ve just been having fun tweaking the presets, there are some good ones. I’m sure I’ll get some great results once I initialize a patch and see what I can come up with. Seems like a very capable little synth with great vibes.
