Features & Capabilities

Zelus WBGT: Real-Time Heat Safety Monitoring

Zelus is a patented system that delivers hyperlocal Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings, lightning alerts, AQI data, and compliance documentation tools — without expensive weather hardware.

WBGT is not the same as temperature or heat index. It accounts for the major environmental factors that affect heat stress, including temperature, humidity, wind, and solar radiation.

WBGT is widely used in athletics, military, workplace safety, and heat illness prevention programs because it provides a more complete picture of heat stress risk.

With Zelus, you can monitor the conditions that matter, save important safety data, and document your decisions in the field.

What Zelus Monitors

• Real-Time WBGT Hyperlocal readings tied to your GPS location or saved locations

• Compliance Documentation Save safety data with date, time, location, and signature stamps to support accountability, compliance, and internal review

• Saved Locations Track fields, campuses, job sites, facilities, and event locations

• Lightning Detection Timely alerts for your area, available with All-Star in the United States only

• Air Quality Index (AQI) Real-time AQI data, available with All-Star where supported

A Few Things to Know

• Heat illness can occur at any temperature. Always have a plan in place to prevent, recognize, and respond to heat illness.

• Zelus may use your phone's last known GPS location. For the most accurate results, use saved locations.

• All environmental measurement systems can occasionally produce readings outside an expected range. Users should always apply their own judgment and follow applicable policies, procedures, and local conditions.

• Zelus WBGT may provide less accurate readings in certain environments, including enclosed tennis courts or large black surfaces such as parking lots.

• Lightning detection is not 100 percent. If you see lightning or hear thunder, take appropriate safety precautions immediately.

• Lightning detection is available in the United States. AQI monitoring is available where supported.

• Signup requires a name and email address.

User Reviews

Users find Zelus WBGT useful for safety—providing WBGT data, clear scales, and guidance, with easy mobile access and frequent use in athletic programs. However, multiple reviews flag accuracy issues (including location-specific inaccuracies and deviations from handheld readings), and there are concerns about mandatory account signup and unclear pricing. Reliability for critical, life‑threatening decisions is questioned, and some note mismatches between readings and time-based/activity recommendations. Overall, practical and safety-oriented but with notable trust and privacy drawbacks.
Pros
  • Provides WBGT readings with multiple scales and guidelines to inform safety decisions.
  • Convenient to have WBGT at your fingertips on a mobile device, aiding quick decision-making.
  • Widely used in athletic programs and campuses to keep teams and students informed about dangerous weather conditions.
  • Focuses on WBGT (not just general temperature), with explanations of scales and activity recommendations.
  • Readings can match handheld devices, offering a portable, cross-checkable alternative.
Cons
  • Inaccurate or unreliable WBGT readings, including substantial deviations from actual conditions and misalignment with handheld measurements.
  • Not accurate for user’s specific location (location-based inaccuracies).
  • Requires creating an account with unclear pricing, raising privacy and cost concerns.
  • Not trusted for life-threatening decisions due to reliability issues and rapid fluctuations in the readings.
  • Occasional mismatch between the WBGT readout and recommended activities or time-of-day guidance.

I only use this app periodically when I’m out in the heat. I don’t need the upsell features and don’t use it often enough to pay a subscription fee - please return a basic, free tier.
