Animoog Z Synthesizer

Multisensory Music Production

Features & Capabilities

Designed by Moog Music, Animoog Z is a 16-voice polyphonic synthesizer that explores multidimensional sound design through the Anisotropic Synth Engine (ASE). Its orbit system lets you move through the X, Y, and Z axes of timbre, creating evolving soundscapes by dragging orbit paths. The built-in keyboard supports per-voice pitch, pressure, and MIDI out, and you can pair it with MPE controllers for expressive control.

Animoog Z ships with a diverse timbre library, a Timbre Editor for recording and editing sounds, and deep modulation options via ENV/LFO and a powerful MOD page. The Effects section, cross-device preset sharing, AUv3 support, Ableton Link, and handy workflow features (preset tagging, random presets, undo/redo) make it suitable for both beginners and pros seeking fluid, immersive music production.

User Reviews

Users praise Animoog Z for its unique, deep wavetable synthesis, rich sound design, and strong MIDI/host integration, plus an expressive Orbs interface. However, recurring problems include significant stability issues (UI freezes/crashes on some devices), several features gated behind paywalls, and UX drawbacks that hinder smooth workflow.
Pros
  • Innovative synthesis with eight crossfading wavetables in a unique crossfade matrix
  • Powerful, flexible modulation including a modulation matrix and strong polyphonic modulation
  • Rich, versatile sounds with a deep engine suitable for vintage and modern textures
  • Excellent host/MIDI integration (Logic Pro, iPad/Mac, BT MIDI, MPE)
  • Expressive, visually engaging interface (Orbs and movement grid) that makes sound design intuitive
Cons
  • Major stability issues: UI freezes and unresponsive controls across devices and OS versions
  • Device/OS-specific stability concerns (crashes on newer devices like iPhone 16, iPadOS issues)
  • Paywalls: too many features locked behind paid unlocks or dynamic articulation
