Lineman's Reference - XFMR LAB

Transformer Training Simulator

Overview

Features & Capabilities

This fully functional transformer lab simulator was designed by a journeyman lineman for linemen and apprentices. Use it to study transformer connections, and when fuses are closed you can test your wiring with a voltmeter, ohmmeter, and rotation meter. Abnormal voltages and cutout fuses exploding can occur with improper connections. In the labs you can inspect the transformers' nameplates and secondary coils, access quick reference diagrams, and review basic transformer reading material. The Quiz mode lets you test your knowledge, and the Company Customized Experience lets a power company tailor the app to their specs.

Current Labs in this app include: Single Phase (Single Bushing Topside, Dual Bushing Topside); Three Phase (Delta-Delta Closed, Delta-Wye Closed, Wye-Wye Closed, Delta-Delta Open, Wye-Delta Open); Misc (Paralleling, 4th Cutout, Troubleshooting, Tutorial); and Advanced (Straight 480, 240/480, 277/480, Corner Grounded 240/480, Wye-Wye 5 Wire 120/240 & 120/208). The built-in Quiz and Advanced Quiz modes challenge you with job-site scenarios to verify and expand your transformer wiring knowledge.

User Reviews

Users praise the app as a strong learning tool with clear diagrams, but several recurring issues hamper use: accuracy/validation bugs, limited bank-building options (no subtractive/additive, no broader voltages), insufficient labs, and UI glitches. Vector charts and advanced features are often requested. If these bugs are fixed and expansions added, it could become a top training tool for linemen.
Pros
  • Excellent learning tool for understanding transformer bank configurations; apprentices find it very helpful.
  • Clear bank diagrams and set diagrams that aid learning.
  • Helps with memorization and practical understanding and builds confidence in real-world bank building.
  • Worth the price; many users say it is well worth the $10.
Cons
  • Inaccurate or inconsistent validation; correct wiring sometimes marked wrong, especially for delta/wye configurations.
  • Limited bank-building options; cannot create subtractive/additive banks, select primary voltages, or access 277/480; no custom banks.
  • Not enough labs/scenarios; requests for more labs and advanced scenarios; limited paralleling options.
  • UI/UX issues and bugs such as non-working voltmeter, layout problems, and orientation requirements; difficulty reviewing during quizzes.
Recent reviews
App is far to clunky, not worth using when you can only wire up 1/3 of the banks due to the lines not connecting.

Learning a lot from this app. Only problem I’ve come across is how to tie the H1/H2 bushings to the tank ground and neutral
