After a few attempts to get a recording, the app finally identified that there was a cicada a few inches away from my phone. I had used that very loud and easily identifiable insect as a test before going out to figure out what I was hearing at night. My mistake, apparently. The app doesn’t tell you this, but you only have one (1) free identification. After that you’ll need to subscribe to the app to do any more sound tests. It costs $4.99 for a weekly sub, $12.99 for a month, and $49.99 for a year. Don’t download this, it’s not worth it.

I used it to try and identify an insect by sound in my kitchen. It tried to upsell me a number of times, access all info on my phone, crashed once, then finally reported back a completely different sounding bug.
