Features & Capabilities

Formulair is designed for apprentice and self-taught perfumers, replacing pen-and-paper workflows with a connected system. It lets you organize raw materials into cards with supplier info, IFRA limits, cost per gram, and purchase dates, plus a dilution reminder. A summary table highlights concentrations used in formulas to spot successful ranges. The app also lets you categorize formulas, search your materials library, assign weights with up to three decimals, and tweak dilutions or substitutions quickly. Key features include a scaling engine, fragrance pyramid visualization, private iCloud storage, a color-driven interface, light/dark mode, and exporting options (PDF, Markdown, TSV). Free tier supports up to 25 materials and 25 formulas, with a one-time in-app purchase for unlimited use.

User Reviews

Formulair is praised for its intuitive, well‑organized database and strong math/formula tools that streamline perfumery workflows. Users value the one‑time purchase and solid documentation. Common drawbacks include price/value concerns, missing bulk editing and reset features, basic import limitations, iCloud‑centric syncing with no Windows support, and occasional stability issues.
Pros
  • Intuitively organized, easy to use database designed for perfumery
  • Powerful built‑in math and scaling features for formulas
  • Strong library management: store materials, notes, and formulas in one place
  • Excellent documentation/tutorials and responsive developer support
  • One‑time premium value that many feel is worth the investment
Cons
  • High price with perceived lack of updates over a long period
  • Missing core features like batch/multi‑item editing and easy library reset
  • Limited import/export options; basic material import and risk of needing manual edits
  • Platform and syncing limitations (iCloud only, no Windows support, cross‑device syncing issues)
  • Stability concerns (crashes when deleting categories/materials) and feature gaps (e.g., no accord library)

I’d rather just enter everything into a spreadsheet and not have to worry about filling out all these new fields and learning the quirks of a new app

This is a great start but for the $40 I paid for it, and seeing there is no update for 1.5 years now, I’m a bit disappointed. There is no way to batch edit multiple items, which seems like a core feature when working with so many materials. The material import is extremely basic. If you get the import wrong, your only recourse is to manually edit every item one by one or delete the app, clear your cache, and start over entirely - this isn’t acceptable in my opinion. The fact you can’t even reset your library without deleting the entire app is an oversight. Again, it’s a good start but it’s surprisingly lacking. I don’t think it is worth the money they’re asking as it is now.
