User Reviews

Users largely praise Yik Yak for helping college students connect and have fun on campus. The app is seen as a convenient way to meet people and participate in campus discussions. However, reviews repeatedly cite moderation problems (unexplained removals and suspensions, potential bias), a toxic, bullying-heavy culture that can harm mental health, and privacy/safety concerns with anonymous posting. Technical issues like loading failures, glitches, and heavy resource use are also common. Some users want UI improvements (direct replies, different post sorting). Overall, strong social value but major governance and reliability drawbacks.
Pros
  • Helps college students connect with their campus community and make friends
  • Entertaining and enjoyable for campus life
  • Facilitates campus discussions and sharing opinions in a casual setting
Cons
  • Inconsistent, opaque moderation leading to unexplained bans and removals
  • Toxic, harassing environment with bullying; negative impact on mental health
  • Privacy and safety concerns due to anonymous posting and potential doxxing
  • Technical issues including loading failures, glitches, and high CPU/resource use
  • UI/UX limitations such as inability to reply directly to comments and limited post sorting

There are so many weird posts on here, ranging from obvious solicitation adverts, sexting, etc. there’s also an incredibly sexist user base 🫩

Would just like to express my distaste for the latest feature that highlights any words that share a name with an existing community. It's *at best* annoying to see advertisements for communities that very often have nothing to do with the post it got linked to. At worst, I've seen someone talking about how they lost their mother, and the word "lost" was hyperlinked to a community for the TV series with the same name.
