Advertisements should be truthful and responsible, especially when promoting video games or any form of media. Recently, an Instagram ad falsely depicted a disturbing scene of a white man throwing a Black baby, which turned out to be a misrepresentation of an actual game. This kind of deceptive marketing is not only unethical but also deeply disappointing, as it exploits sensitive racial dynamics to generate shock value and engagement. Such tactics can lead to unnecessary outrage and misunderstandings, which ultimately harm both the audience and the credibility of the gaming industry. Seeing this kind of misleading content in a game advertisement is disheartening. Video games are meant to entertain, challenge, and sometimes even educate, but using false and inflammatory imagery to gain attention crosses an ethical line. It reflects poorly on both the advertisers and the developers who allow such marketing strategies. Instead of relying on dishonest ads, companies should focus on accurately representing their games and respecting their audiences. Misleading advertisements like this not only damage trust but can also contribute to the spread of misinformation, which is especially concerning in today’s digital landscape. As a consumer, I expect honesty and integrity from advertisers, and this kind of false representation makes me question the industry’s standards. If a game needs to rely on deceptive and sensationalist marketing, it raises doubts about the quality of the product itself. Gaming companies and ad platforms should take responsibility for ensuring that their promotions reflect reality rather than exploiting racial and social issues for clicks. Moving forward, there needs to be more accountability in advertising to prevent such misleading and harmful content from spreading.

This is a problem with a number of games, not only this one. There’s an ad for a game involving a family tree. Right out of the gate they go in on the transphobia. There’s a character named something like, “Ugly James”. It then says that “HE’S decided to transition to being a woman. Choices are given regarding what James should do about that. A computer animated finger chooses something along the lines of, “Let him change into a woman”. When this choice is made there’s a cackling sound effect. Then, it asks what James’ father should do about James’ transition (meanwhile they’re misgendering HER and calling her HE) and the choices are either, “Cut ties with your SON” or “Just accept it”. No big surprise the animated finger chooses option number one. This whole thing makes a big joke about being transgender and the struggle MANY trans people go through when it comes to their families accepting them and respecting them enough to call them by their chosen name and to not misgender them. Many trans youth end up homeless and if they’re not old enough to get a job (a number of jobs require you to be at least 18 to work there and ones which will hire employees as young as 16 will pay even more of a pittance than they pay the adults and how’s a teenager supposed to survive on that?!) then they often have to turn to things like sex work just to survive. Not to mention if they don’t “pass” (fully embody the gender they’re transitioning to, physically and otherwise) every time they are out in public their lives are in danger. On Trans Day of Rememberance we honor all the trans people who lost their lives throughout the year and the sheer number of trans people murdered is astounding, unfathomable, and, (if you have a shred of empathy and compassion towards your fellow humans) heartbreaking. Why did I just write a whole doctoral dissertation on transphobia? Because jokes, like the one in this ad, are the seeds of violence. It starts with jokes and escalates over time until the path leads to a trans person being physically assaulted, sexually assaulted, or just outright murdered, if not all three. These jokes need to stop, making light of the struggles trans people face every single day, and using religion as an excuse to be hateful towards trans people. I suspect that the maker of the game that is advertised is from a religion or culture where transphobia is baked into them because, otherwise, they’d know that’s not funny AT ALL. TRANS PEOPLE ARE DYING IN RECORD NUMBERS and the list of murdered trans individuals gets longer and longer every year. If you ever come across the ad in a game you’re playing, PLEASE DON’T DOWNLOAD THE GAME BEING ADVERTISED. It’s by a trash game company anyway that exists only to force you to watch a zillion ads at every turn and charges you to make them go away. If you read this far, thank you! Even if you don’t agree with me at least you took the time to hear out my side of the story and I sincerely hope I changed some hearts and minds.
