User Reviews

Users praise light&depth for its comprehensive set of planning tools for depth of field, field of view, and focal-length calculations, plus a clean interface and strong educational value. The app helps photographers and videographers plan shots and avoid guesswork, and is considered a good value for its price. However, recurring issues include a unit-display bug where metric selections still show inches/feet, and mixed unit presentation that confuses users. Onboarding could be improved with a tutorial. There are occasional mode-specific calculation inaccuracies, and some reviews note long periods without updates. Overall, powerful but with notable reliability and UX caveats.
Pros
  • Extensive, feature-rich toolset for planning shots, including depth of field, field of view, and focal-length calculations.
  • User-friendly, well-designed interface that makes complex calculations approachable.
  • Educational resource that helps photographers learn about focal lengths, exposure planning, and DoF.
  • Strong value for the price; offered at a modest cost relative to the features.
  • Helpful for manual-focus setups and adapter lenses, reducing guesswork when planning shots.
Cons
  • Unit/measurement display doesn't consistently respect the selected system, causing mixed inches/feet and metric displays.
  • Onboarding could be improved; the app throws a lot at the user and would benefit from tutorials.
  • Occasional calculation inaccuracies in specific modes (e.g., primes mode).
  • Evidence of stagnation on updates; not updated for years.

Even when metric units are selected, inches and feet still appear. Fix this!

As an American, I naturally use feet and inches and while you can switch to Imperial units in app, you can tell this was designed by someone unaccustomed to that system. Once you go below around 6’, then measurements are entirely in inches. 57in is a much harder distance to imagine that than 4’ 9” or even 4.75’. If I can someone change this so it maintains the unit counter at feet and inches throughout the scale, Id give this five stars. This flaw also to be honest is frustrating enough for me to stop using the app

Dear Lukas, Thank you for your beautifully designed and functional app. I find it very detailed and useful. However, I have encountered an issue that’s quite inconvenient for me. When I select the metric system (centimeters and meters) in the settings, the app still displays lengths in feet and inches when the measurement exceeds one meter. Since I primarily use the metric system here, this conversion can be a bit confusing and inconvenient. I would prefer if the app consistently used the metric system throughout, even for measurements over one meter. Additionally, I noticed that the app hasn’t been updated for nearly three years. I was wondering if you’ve been focusing on other projects recently, and whether you plan to continue developing and maintaining this app in the future. Thank you for considering this feedback. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards.
