Features & Capabilities

Explore. Observe. Contribute. MeadoWatch App makes it easy to record wildflower phenology and support climate research in Mount Rainier National Park.

MeadoWatch uses a Community Science approach, and volunteers are essential to the success of our program. Every summer, participants are encouraged to visit trails to record wildflower phenology (the timing of flowering, fruiting and seed production) of some of the most beautiful alpine wildflowers in the world. We use this information to understand which climatic factors trigger flowering and seed production, and how climate change may alter the the timing of seed production. Currently, we are live with two trails at Mt. Rainier National Park

User Reviews

Overall, this app made collecting MedoWatch data very smooth and efficient. It was great to use my phone instead of dealing with a clipboard for the entire hike! Easy to get to information on the species when needed. No problems collecting data or syncing data when I got back to Wifi. Problems I encountered were that I didn’t realize when using the app I was supposed to take photos of the phenophases I saw, and the plot information for plot 12 of Glacier Basin was incorrect. A few tweaks I would like to see: - Have a tutorial mode where you can go in and practice selecting options and see what the whole thing looks like before creating a data set. - On the individual plot pages, identify the target species expected to be found there. Possibly by graying out the options for other trail species not expected in the plot, or hiding them under an expansion tab. - Change the wording on each plot to “Save Data” rather than “Submit Data” to make it obvious you can go back and make changes to each species page if you realize you entered something incorrectly. At first I was worried I couldn’t make a change if I exited out of the species page. - A basic map image of each trail with plots marked under the “Manual” tab - Organize the target species in alphabetical order like the printed manual. - Option to add a comment/picture on a plot. Useful for communicating information such as “Missing plot tag” or if you saw a bear near the plot.

App records the flowers at each plot. Because of the cell coverage, the app signs out the user, but is able to resume.
