User Reviews

Users praise the impressive concept and note it can run lightweight Linux distros on iPad and works well on Mac, but reliability is hampered by severe performance slowdowns on iOS, limited OS compatibility with frequent boot errors, crashes, and input/mouse control problems on iPadOS.
Pros
  • Impressive ability to run a VM on iOS/iPadOS.
  • Usable with lightweight Linux distros (Debian LXDE/Xfce, Alpine, Arch) on iPad.
  • Works reasonably well on Mac and is a notable PC-emulator on Apple devices.
  • Niche tool that enables experimentation with virtual machines on mobile platforms.
Cons
  • Very slow performance on iOS/iPadOS, often with no JIT acceleration.
  • Inconsistent OS compatibility and boot issues (Windows XP/7, various Linux distros) including boot/installation errors.
  • Frequent crashes during use (e.g., when adding a drive or at launch).
  • Input/mouse control issues on iPadOS and general usability frictions.

So basically UTM se stand for slow edition and I tested it on my iPad Air 5 and it can run windows 11 and Mac OS 10.6 smoothly but on older devices like iPad 8 it’s slow and laggy and crashes I was able to emulate windows 8 and Mac OS 9 and older the reason why I was saying my iPad Air 5 is faster because it has that hyper visor feature which allows to virtualize instead of emulation and it has the M1 chip and has 8gbs of ram and 256 gbs so if you have a older devices get a newer one I hope apple will allow jit ASAP and my iPad 8 has 3gbs of ram and 128 gbs so older devices are for nostalgia and new devices are for modern use so 4/5 stars
