User Reviews

StartEngine is praised for easy access to pre-IPO startup investing and a beginner-friendly feel with early opportunities. However, many reviews report serious downsides: funds locked and shares unsellable, poor customer support, and frequent technical issues. Some users question legitimacy, calling it a scam, and the Venture Club fee is seen as costly with unclear value. Overall, accessibility and potential are offset by liquidity, reliability, and trust concerns.
Pros
  • Easy access to pre-IPO/startup investing for a broad audience
  • Simple, user-friendly platform that feels approachable for beginners
  • Early access to investment opportunities not easily found elsewhere
  • Venture Club benefits and bonus shares cited as added value by some users
  • Overall positive sentiment from investors about opportunities to fund startups
Cons
  • Inability to withdraw or sell investments; funds appear locked and divestment is often hard or impossible
  • Poor or unresponsive customer support; slow replies or no contact
  • Technical issues and accessibility problems (website downtime, login glitches, iOS compatibility)
  • Perceived scam risk/questionable legitimacy raised by multiple users
  • High membership fees with unclear value (Venture Club $275/year) relative to benefits
Recent reviews
StartEngine feels structured to profit off retail enthusiasm while leaving everyday investors holding illiquid, heavily diluted, or abandoned shares. Until StartEngine holds listed companies accountable for reporting and protects early retail backers from predatory restructuring, it is very hard to view this platform as anything more than a high-risk trap for retail money. Save your capital or stick to public index funds.

They let you buy shares but you can never sell them. If you want to sell you need to pay a $275 anual membership with NO guarantee that someone will be interested in buying. Therefore you “have” shares but forget about getting money out of them ever. It’s a one side transaction and you are on the losing end.
